Cowritten and produced with Cameron’s second wife, Gale Anne Hurd, the first installment cost $6.4 million to make and grossed $78.4 million. The saga of Terminator 2 begins with its predecessor. “It’s as simple as that.” Part 1: “If We Pull It Off, It Will Be Huge.” “There’s only one Jim Cameron,” Schwarzenegger says. And every time you copied something, you lost something.” Many of the facsimiles are entertaining, but they’re still facsimiles. Most imitators, ILM’s nine-time Academy Award recipient Dennis Muren says, are like “Xeroxes of Xeroxes of Xeroxes. Precious few massively budgeted, VFX-laden, star-filled tentpole pictures, however, have been able to replicate the alchemy of T2. The top-grossing movie of 1991 escalated a big-screen arms race that’s played out in American cineplexes every summer since. Industrial Light & Magic’s cutting-edge visual effects, a Kevlar-tough woman as the lead, dozens of memorable one-liners, and terrifyingly prescient themes combined to form a blockbuster that pushed the limits of the medium. But that somehow undersells its appeal and influence. The juxtaposition of warmth and spectacle is what elevates Terminator 2 above nearly all other ’90s popcorn flicks. “Look at Titanic, it’s all about relationships,” says Arnold Schwarzenegger, who relished the chance to turn the cybernetic bad guy he played in The Terminator into a good guy. And the T-800, once a remorseless killer with a curious but hypnotic Austrian accent, somehow helps bring them together as a family-then helps them save the world. Her son, John, the future leader of the resistance in the war against the genocidally self-aware defense system Skynet, is in foster care. T2 is a departure from the far bleaker original, 1984’s The Terminator, which its creator calls a “science-fiction slasher film.” Linda Hamilton’s franchise protagonist, Sarah Connor, has transformed from a put-upon heroine to a self-trained commando whose attempts to thwart the coming apocalypse land her in a psychiatric hospital. This movie is about the Tin Man getting his heart.” “Sure, there’s going to be big, thunderous action sequences, but the heart of the movie is that relationship,” Cameron says from his home in New Zealand. The sequel wouldn’t work without a strong bond between the reprogrammed title character and the teenager he’s sent back in time to protect. To its director, T2 is the story of a boy and the father he never had. Yet the science-fiction epic, released 30 years ago this week, hinged on more than technical wizardry. And by the time he was done, he’d created one of 20th century cinema’s greatest “Holy shit!” moments. He’d landed on the idea of the T-1000, an android assassin seemingly made of flowing mercury that could shape-shift into any other organism. Something that, in the early ’90s, had never even been attempted. In the brainstorming phase for Terminator 2: Judgment Day, he knew the sequel to his first big hit had to have something no one had seen before. James Cameron wanted a villain made out of liquid metal. Ahead of the release of James Cameron’s latest boundary-pushing project, Avatar: The Way of Water, there’s no better time to revisit this oral history of Terminator 2: Judgment Day.

You can also come in with late aerials (dair is good for shield stabbing and nair is good for shield poking) to shines. Space attacks in the exact same way a Puff would do to you turn around and autocancel SHBairs until you force a reaction from her. Once Puff touches the ground, that's where you take control. Reverse laser, runaway laser, do whatever you have to do to shoot the gun until Puff's movement carries her back down to the ground. If Puff takes to the air, she's a clay pidgeon. Unlike many other characters who are learning powershielding to keep up with Falco's oppressive laser game, Puff needs to stay in the air to maintain control and momentum, so powershielding isn't an option. The best tools for this are lasers, far and away. So the first step in the matchup is to get her on the ground. However, because her ground movement is so limited, she can't really maneuver is she's on the ground. Dtilt is a decent poke, Ftilt is a good 'get off me' move, and Uptilt is a combo move. So with that in mind, how do we approach these roadblocks as Falco?įirst, notice that her grounded options are very limited. If you miss the DI on upthrow, you lose a stock. Be ready to DI away whenever you get grabbed, because upthrow is the constant threat. In addition, when Puff is on the ground, her most potent threat against you is grab. This is a matchup where you have to learn how to DI each attack. Puff gets kills off of guaranteed rest setups and DI traps. What's worse, DI'ing any one of her aerials the wrong way is suicide. With a good read, she can hit you with a pound, a move which stays out a long time and has a wonky hitbox. She's got 5 jumps and can autocancel several aerials. She can poke and weave back without ever touching the ground and thus can maintain control for a very long time. If a Puff is in control, she will hover just outside of your range and poke at you/your shield with aerials. She is at home in the air, with terrific aerials and the ability to weave in and out of another person's range. Remember that Puff has the best aerial movement and control in the game. The Puff matchup basically boils down to locking her in one place on the ground and keeping her there until she messes up and you can start attacking her. So, unlike Falco's matchups versus fast and medium fallers, you stand only to lose by being anything but frustratingly patient in floaty matchups. His high, arcing ball came down near the 5-yard-line. Staubach’s 50-yard prayer was answered, but not without a bit of deviltry. READ MORE: Compared to his sons, Archie Manning's NFL career flopped "I just threw it up there as far as I could." “It was a Hail Mary pass,” Staubach told reporters afterward. “The chances on a play like that,” Pearson told reporters after the game, “are slim and none.” Their season appeared over.Ĭoach Tom Landry, another Pro Football Hall of Famer, called for a long pass. With the Vikings ahead, 14-10, the Cowboys had the ball with just 24 seconds left at midfield. On December 28, 1975, Staubach's Cowboys played against the Vikings in a divisional playoff game at Metropolitan Stadium in Bloomington, Minnesota. Naval Academy, of course, is not affiliated with any faith, but its quarterback, Staubach, is Catholic.Īfter a victory over Michigan in 1963, Staubach-who won the Heisman Trophy that season-described a touchdown as “a Hail Mary play.” Twelve years later, after an NFL game, the term stuck, fueled by newspaper sports sections and widespread use on television. Notre Dame and Georgetown are affiliated with the Catholic Church, so the Hail Mary was familiar to every player and coach who said the prayer as penance after giving confession. An Associated Press preview story mentioned that the “Hoyas put faith in the Hail Mary pass.” The story matter of factly offered this definition: “A Hail Mary pass, in the talk of the (Georgetown) 11, is one that is thrown with a prayer because the odds against completion are big.” The term reappeared six years later, when Georgetown played Mississippi State in the 1941 Orange Bowl. READ MORE: When college stars played NFL champs Layden, recalling that victory against Georgia Tech, called it “a Hail Mary play.” With 32 seconds left, Notre Dame completed a 19-yard pass for the winning touchdown. Perhaps the term would have vanished were it not for Elmer Layden, who played fullback in that 1922 game for The Fighting Irish and coached Notre Dame against Ohio State in 1935. Afterward, Notre Dame offensive lineman Noble Kizer declared: “Say, that Hail Mary play is the best play we’ve got!” It worked, so they did it again before scoring another 6-yard touchdown. In a game against Georgia Tech in 1922, Notre Dame players literally said a “Hail Mary” prayer in the huddle before scoring a 6-yard touchdown. READ MORE: The greatest games in sports history Hail Mary thus became ingrained in the American sports lexicon, but the term was used decades earlier. You throw it up and pray," Staubach said.In 1975, Dallas Cowboys quarterback Roger Staubach popularized the term "Hail Mary" to describe his miracle, winning touchdown pass to fellow Pro Football Hall of Famer Drew Pearson in a playoff game against the Minnesota Vikings. Reporters asked him what happened after the game. "Well, I guess you could call it a Hail Mary. They won 17-14 on a late 50-yard touchdown heave from Staubach to Drew Pearson. In 1975, the Cowboys played the Minnesota Vikings in the playoffs. Everybody knew that he was obviously the star on the team and had a million demands, but he never put himself above the team. "For a guy who won the Heisman, he was such a humble guy, a hard-working guy," Bill Belichick told Wang. Bill idolizes his dad and rightfully so."īill Belichick had high praise of Staubach to Gene Wang of the Washington Post: After the game, he said winning that Super Bowl next to his son was the most excited he's ever been. He came running over to me before the game and gave me a big hug. When they won the Super Bowl that first time, Steve had retired and was on the sideline. Steve Belichick, Bill's father, was at the Academy when I was. "Well, I grew up at the Naval Academy and Bill Belichick's dad was a coach there. Oddly enough, the AVP films are the earliest films of the Alien franchise, as they take place well before the events of Prometheus or Alien, starting off at the dawn of human civilization, where Predators used Earth as a hunting ground for xenomorphs, leading all the way up to the present day (21st Century). The next Alien franchise effort will be in the form of Noah Hawley's Alien series for FX, which takes place toward the end of the 21st century on Earth.įor those wanting to watch the Alien films in chronological order, the roster is a bit tricky, as the films shuffle around quite a bit. Ridley Scott returned to the series in 2012 with a prequel film, Prometheus, then followed that successful endeavor up with a 2017's Alien: Covenant, which had a lukewarm reception and is the last of the Alien films to be released in theaters. Alien 3, released in 1992, was director David Fincher's first feature film, which served to close out a trilogy of sorts. Director James Cameron picked up the sequel reigns with 1986's Aliens, which served as more of a sci-fi action film than a sci-fi horror film. The Alien: Covenant cast also includes Katherine Waterston, Danny McBride, James Franco, Demian Bichir, Jussie Smollett, Amy Seimetz, Carmen Ejogo, Callie Hernandez and Noomi Rapace. The first Alien film was released in 1979, directed by Ridley Scott and starring Sigourney Weaver as Lieutenant Ellen Ripley, who became the human face of the series for the first four films. Bound for a remote planet on the far side of the galaxy, the crew of the colony ship Covenant discovers what they think is an uncharted paradise, but is actually a dark, dangerous world - whose sole inhabitant is the "synthetic" David (Michael Fassbender), survivor of the doomed Prometheus expedition. Ridley Scott returns to the universe he created in Alien with Alien: Covenant, the second chapter in a prequel trilogy that began with Prometheus, and connects directly to Scott's 1979 seminal work of science fiction. Overall, it takes between 20 and 30 minutes for water to become urine and be passed out of the body. This forms the urine, which then passes down the funnel-shaped connection of the ureters and into the bladder, which stores it until it is ready to be emptied through the urethra. Water passes through the glomeruli, or tiny capillary networks, and when it reaches the tubules, it is combined with electrolytes, other waste products and excess water. As the water passes through these systems, the kidneys filter out waste and minerals and convert them into either a waste product or into a combination of waste products and salts.Īs this occurs, the kidneys also reabsorb minerals and salts to help replenish electrolyte stores and keep the body in balance. When water enters the kidneys, it passes through a series of tubules and filtration systems before it can be converted into urine. This process can sometimes take 15 to 20 minutes. Generally speaking, the process typically starts in the renal tubules of the kidneys, where the primary function is to filter the blood, extract waste, and convert it into urine. The amount of time it takes for water to become urine varies depending on a number of factors. The conversions are rounded to the nearest whole number for example, 1 fluid ounce is 29.57 milliliters, but for simplicity sake, we will say 30 milliliters. Moderation is key, and it is advised to have some breaks throughout the day, mixed with meals and other drinks apart from water. Instead of struggling and second-guessing, simply convert the liquid metric measurements to fluid ounces, and then if need be, convert to cups, tablespoons, or teaspoons. Therefore, while it is okay to drink a gallon of water per day, it is important to be aware of your body and stay hydrated in a healthy way. This can cause nausea, confusion, and disorientation, and in extreme cases can even lead to seizures or coma. Since a gallon is around 16 cups, 1 gallon of water per day is well above the recommended amount.ĭrinking too much water can cause electrolyte imbalance in the body. The Institute of Medicine suggests that men should drink about 3 liters, or 13 cups, of total beverages per day, and women should consume about 2.Ģ liters, or 9 cups, of total beverages per day. Yes, it is generally okay to drink a gallon of water a day. The game’s success led to ports for the Amiga, PC-98, SNES, and Sega CD. It has a very clean look to it, and enemy sprites are spot on to their table top counterparts that you would find illustrated in various Dungeons & Dragons Monster Manuals. The different dungeon locations all have distinctive wall textures, and the enemies have nice animations for their attacks. While Eye of the Beholder doesn’t break new ground with its level design or combat, the game was impressive graphically. Battles usually involve nothing more than hacking away at enemies until they’re defeated, with no concern for strategy or tactics. While you can view your character’s statistics, and weapons and armor all come with different stat modifiers, it really feels as though it doesn’t make that much of a difference in the end. However, the drawback to this approach is a feeling of little to no depth. The game definitely benefits from this as battles never seem to last for too long, and you’re left to focus more on exploring. Upon resting the number of uses for spells is restored and decreases as you use them, being refilled yet again only during the next rest.Īs mentioned, the combat in Eye of the Beholder is straightforward and fast paced. Instead of being able to cast a spell as long as they have the magic points or mana, instead mages or clerics choose from a list of spells to memorize when they rest. The magic system is also handled in a more traditional AD&D sense similar to other games from the genre. There are also tons of hidden doors and switches that you must find in order to progress, which just results in more of a headache rather than a deep roleplaying experience. However, the dungeon layout does prove a bit frustrating in later levels, as there is no in-game map and many tiles of the dungeon will teleport or rotate your party without it ever being obvious, just like in the ancient Wizardry games. The game eventually ramps up the enemy difficulty and floor complexity as you proceed, which makes for a balanced experience. At first you’ll simply start in the sewers of Waterdeep, fighting ordinary kobolds as you go along. Upon starting the game you take some time to create your team of four heroes choosing their race, class, and approving their stats before beginning the quest. You’ll adventure through Dwarven ruins and Drow communities, until ultimately coming upon the lair of Xanathar himself for the final showdown. As they progress through the dungeon, they learn that a Beholder by the name of Xanathar is behind all of this evil and is planning to take over Waterdeep. Not far into the underground labyrinth, part of the tunnel collapses and the adventurers are sealed off with no other option than to explore and fight their way through hordes of monsters. It seems as though some evil is brewing below the city and the group immediately sets off into the sewers. The general success of the series led to the release of the Eye of the Beholder Trilogy for the PC in 1995, and the games were also included in the collection Gamefest: Forgotten Realms Classics which was released in 2001 by Interplay.Įye of the Beholder opens with a group of adventurers who have been summoned to the city of Waterdeep. Its streamlined approach to the genre made it more accessible, as did the ports of the first game for the SNES and Sega CD. While Eye of the Beholder doesn’t revolutionize the genre in any way, it still remains one of SSI’s more well-known and successful series. Though some characters are reoccurring throughout the series, the narrative seems to have taken a back seat and serves no true purpose rather than to give you reason to hack through monsters. The story is then introduced through a short cutscene, and your band of explorers are then thrown into some dungeon. You can take time to create a party of four adventurers, or choose to import characters from the previous games a feature that was incorporated into various other SSI games. This does add some strategy to how you can approach battles, but ultimately running up to most enemies and simply attacking with your melee characters is all you need to do for most encounters.Įach game usually begins the same way. The characters in the front row take most of the damage, and can attack with standard melee weapons, while those in the rear can throw weapons or cast spells without being in harm’s way unless, of course, the enemy attacks you from behind. As long as you can see the enemy, you can immediately begin combat with long range attacks as you approach the same goes for your adversaries. Fights are triggered as you approach enemies without the need to ever enter a battle sequence. Combat benefits the most from this approach, and is handled fairly well. |
